Summary

Ok。 I have no idea why this series is recommended for someone who absolutely loved the ACOTAR series。 None。 Unless the second book introduces a new male love character, this series doesn’t hold a candle to ACOTAR。 Rant over。 Taking all that aside, and looking at this book as it was written, it was okay, at best。 Poppy is likable and strong at the beginning, so much so that I felt her pain and was looking forward to her story and her coming alive。 Hawke was suspicious from the start, and their me Ok。 I have no idea why this series is recommended for someone who absolutely loved the ACOTAR series。 None。 Unless the second book introduces a new male love character, this series doesn’t hold a candle to ACOTAR。 Rant over。 Taking all that aside, and looking at this book as it was written, it was okay, at best。 Poppy is likable and strong at the beginning, so much so that I felt her pain and was looking forward to her story and her coming alive。 Hawke was suspicious from the start, and their meet cute left much to be desired (no pun intended) and was underwhelming。 Poppy who was really the only reason I kept reading turned into a horrible character。 Like she should not be anyone’s role model。 I was disgusted。 The overall underlying plot line was both good and bad。 Good as in it was creative, intriguing, and full of twists。 Bad as in it’s more gory and graphic than I cared for。 Some scenes are really hard to read。 Think some Game of Thrones thrown in。(view spoiler)[Poppy。 She is strong yet weak。 She is the maiden, chosen for some mystery rite she doesn’t even know much about。 Though she is surrounded by guards and supper important, she wants to fight for herself and live。 I can respect her for that。 Where she fails is how she goes about living。 First, giving her first kiss to a crush she had, a guard who everyone loves and girls fall over for, ironic and too cliche。 But that night, she was almost willing to give her maidenhood to him too, really? Her friends, guards, and others die, and so of course the guard she’s pining for, Hawke, gets assigned to her。 He knows it was her he kissed and they inevitably continue their forbidden relationship。 Surprise! After giving her maidenhood to Hawke, he turns out to be the Cassian, Prince of Atlantia and the bad guy Poppy was warned about。 He is responsible for people she cared about dying but of course Poppy still loves him。 The final straw was when she literally stabs him in the heart to try new kill him (I was rooting her), tries to run away, and then he catches up to her, rolls her in the snow, and they have sex again。 She hates and loves him even though he’s lied to her from the start and his whole agenda was capturing her。 She willingly gives herself to him。 She wants him。 Ugh。 Toxic relationship。 I would love to see Kieran as a better suitor though really at this point I am frustrated at Poppy。The plot line。 So the bad guys turn out to possibly be the good guys。 Poppy and I am unsure and confused, but this plot line is intriguing。 The mystery。 Vampires, werewolves, and a mysterious Atlantian race。It’s fantastic, honestly, and will be why I keep reading, but Poppy and Cassian’s relationship sucks。 Poppy, strong and full of want to live ends up in a toxic, emotionally and borderline sexually abusive relationship。 Why? So much wasted。 (hide spoiler)]Okay, so for the plot line and mystery and who Poppy was for 1/2 the story, this is a tolerable book。 For the romance, NO。 Poppy and Hawke are not a healthy relationship or relationship goals。 None。 Steer clear of that。 This is NOT ACOTAR and people need to stop recommending it as such。 In my opinion, Hawke has no redemption arc after what he’s done, the lines he crossed, the way he manipulates and uses Poppy’s burning desires against her。 Controlling freak。 He’s worse than Tamlin。 For an intriguing mystery and world, this is a fairly good book otherwise, just not the romance, okay? 。。。more

Soooo… I really didn´t expect to like this book… but I did。 A lot。But it´s far from perfect。 For example, the first few chapters。 I really didn´t expect it to get spicy already at the very beginning – and I had a hard time taking it seriously that our fair maiden always has been told that “no no – you can´t have sex, the gods will find you unworthy then” and knowing how much it will endanger her life, and then she is still going around just searching for that… 🍆👀And I know that this was supposed Soooo… I really didn´t expect to like this book… but I did。 A lot。But it´s far from perfect。 For example, the first few chapters。 I really didn´t expect it to get spicy already at the very beginning – and I had a hard time taking it seriously that our fair maiden always has been told that “no no – you can´t have sex, the gods will find you unworthy then” and knowing how much it will endanger her life, and then she is still going around just searching for that… 🍆👀And I know that this was supposed to be a spicy book, and it was, but some of the spicy scenes also just felt misplaced and very unnatural。It seems most people who were meeh about this book didn´t like the beginning but liked the last half of the book – but I thought the first 300 pages were a 5-star read and then I lost a little bit of interest in the story after those。 😅And then I got angry because of a plot-twist。And I was so mad at the book, and I felt like it had lost everything for me。 But then the ending came, and it was okay。 ☺️☺️🤣The plot-twist weren´t shocking and it was pretty easy to catch the foreshadowing and know what they meant, but I didn´t really mind it。 The ending still had some pretty interesting turns。It´s not a groundbreaking book by any means, and the relationship is definitely not a healthy one, but it was an addicting book and a solid plot – so I do think I will continue with this series。 。。。more

I see why this book one the Goodreads Choice Award for Romance--it's a great read and oh, so sexy! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I’ll admit I was kind of hesitant to how I was gonna rate this book, but ultimately settled on 3 stars - because despite all its flaws I did enjoy this book。And it does have flaws; the world building is a bit all over the place。 Initially I assumed it was a medieval fantasy setting, but then electricity was mentioned。 But they still travel by horse。 And definitely do not have any kind of phones or radio etc, so I’m unsure what electricity was used for in this world besides lamps。 Also showers ar I’ll admit I was kind of hesitant to how I was gonna rate this book, but ultimately settled on 3 stars - because despite all its flaws I did enjoy this book。And it does have flaws; the world building is a bit all over the place。 Initially I assumed it was a medieval fantasy setting, but then electricity was mentioned。 But they still travel by horse。 And definitely do not have any kind of phones or radio etc, so I’m unsure what electricity was used for in this world besides lamps。 Also showers are mentioned and running water, so I am slightly confused。 Additionally, the magic system is a bit。。。 flawed too。 There are vampires but they are called vamprys, Atlantians who 1) live for millennia, 2) drink blood, 3) can compel mortals, 4) can create vamprys by feeding their blood to mortals - and yet they are not vampires? There are also werewolves, only they are called wolven, and creatures called craven who seem to be a mix of zombie and vampire (created by vampires)。 The distinctions between the magical creatures are a bit loose and it’s not really explained until the very end of the book, and then it’s in a big exposition dump。 There is a tendency to just cherry pick parts of pop culture fantasy tropes and stick them in the story, with the expectation that we as readers will instantly know what they are/mean even if it doesn’t make sense。 For example, werewolves aren’t mentioned at all throughout the novel until the very end when one suddenly is there and the lead character instantly knows what it is, with no further explanation necessary。 Moreover, yes the plot is predictable。 I guessed from the first time our lead character Poppy met Hawke (love interest TM) that he would end up betraying her and that he likely was the enemy, if not even that he was “The Dark One”。 Nonetheless, there were times when I liked them together, they have some fun banter and good moments, but they also had moments where the line between romantic and toxic/creepy seemed to get too mixed up。 The part in end when he does betray her does sting though - and I don’t understand why it’s glossed over as much as it is。 I mean, he kills/brings about the death of her closest friends and the guards meant to protect her, then tells her her whole life has been a lie。 She was abused by the Ascendents who turned out to be vampires, and he reveals the truth to her about the vampires evil plans。 But, his side also killed plenty of innocent people? So there doesn’t yet seem to be that much of a difference between the vampires and the Atlantians in that regard。 He also goes out of his way to say that he will not let her die, that she is his, but in his next breath says that he is gonna trade her for his brother and who is being kept captive by the vampires (?!)。 Meaning, he saved her life only to then give her back to her abusers。 He saw no problem with this apparently, but when he realizes she isn’t entirely human - suddenly he changes his tune and decides to marry her instead。 This part is where the book lost me a little, a find it hard to root for Hawke/Cas when he was so fine with just using her as leverage and a means to an end, until she was *special*。 Also, since it was revealed that their first meeting was planned and orchestrated by Hawke, it ruins their relationship a bit more for me。 Looking back so much more of their interactions seem like manipulation and lies。 Another thing I just cannot get over; Tawny, best friend to Poppy, was just completely forgotten in the latter part of the book。 She was left behind with the supposedly evil vampires but no one cared enough about her to save her or bring her with them? Not even Poppy thought of her when she learned the truth about the Ascendants。 I hoped Poppy would demand to save Tawny, or that at the end of the book she would run away and decide to get her herself, but no such luck。 I think Tawny is also the only POC character in the book, and given how she is treated at the end, she is definitely a token character。 She had no purpose besides being Poppy’s friend and confidant。 Last flaw I’ll bring up; the language the characters use。 The world is supposed to be more medieval (?) but the characters use a lot of modern slang mixed with more old fashioned language。 I do understand that this is a YA book so maybe consistency is language isn’t prioritized, but it’s still something that I felt could have been improved。 I know I’ve listed a lot of flaws, some quite big, but I will say that despite it all, toxic romance and betrayals, flawed world building etc, I did like parts of this book。 It’s a guilty pleasure read, and if you turn your brain off for a while and just enjoy it for what it is - a fantasy romance with some dark elements, not very deep or complex, then I think you can still enjoy it。 The characters aren’t very well developed, but since there are two more books I’m hoping for more complexity as it unfolds。 I think I’ll read at least the next book, but I’m not in a rush to do so。 As of right now writing this review, I’m also still plenty pissed at Hawke so we’ll see how it goes。 But since I am angry at Hawke, I guess that means I did get emotionally involved with the story and characters, which is what I want when I’m reading books。 Having an emotional reaction is to me more important than perfect world building or flawless character work, so that’s ultimately why I still give it 3 stars。 。。。more

I’m annoyed。 Obviously not annoyed enough that I didn’t finish the book… or start the sequel, but I’m still annoyed。 Just so you know, that’s the proper way to use an ellipsis。 JLA could learn from me。 Where to start? I hated the first 3/4 of this book, honestly。 Poppy was probably the stupidest protagonist I’ve ever read, everything about her was annoying and contradicting。 I didn’t want the book to be from her POV in first person because I felt like I was getting annoyed at myself。 I’m done th I’m annoyed。 Obviously not annoyed enough that I didn’t finish the book… or start the sequel, but I’m still annoyed。 Just so you know, that’s the proper way to use an ellipsis。 JLA could learn from me。 Where to start? And I have a soft spot for anything involving werewolves, wolven, whatever you want to call them。 Towards the end of the book I feel like it picked up a little and if there is one thing JLA can write it’s a spicy bit of hubba hubba so I’ll give her credit for that。 。。。more

3。5 - there is so much about this book that is…。not good。 It’s like Twilight on steroids。 You could definitely make a drinking game out of every time she has a shiver or a shudder or a tremor。 It definitely does that thing that dystopias love to do where you take a normal person or place name and make it sound weird to make sure the reader knows it’s “another world”。 Penellophe?! Atlantia?! I wish I could give half points on here because this is a solid 3。5/5I really enjoyed this book!! It was a bit slow starting out but once it got good, oh my God, it got good。 And once you got further into the book, the faster it moved。 The last 100 pages are insane, I’ll leave it at that。 It’s plot twist, after plot twist, after plot twist。 If you love dramatic fantasy reads with a steamy romance, you’ll LOVE this book。 The chemistry between Poppy and Hawke is undeniable。 I found myself smiling I wish I could give half points on here because this is a solid 3。5/5I really enjoyed this book!!
